My Farewell Blog

At least for a few days! Because we'll have company any minute now! Wa-Hooooo!!! Actually, I HOPE we'll have company any minute now. I hear tell (or is it "I hear tale"?! Ha!) there's been some snow up north of here. Brother Dustin said they had some surpise snow in 'Springs this weekend. The only real issue with them getting here might be Raton pass. We were expecting them at about 11:00, so I'll call and check on 'em if they don't show up in the next few minutes. I really just wanted to stop by and let you know that I'm going to be partying this week, not blogging. I might surprise myself, but I usually don't waste any time sitting in front of a computer when I have real, live people to be with!

~gasp~ The dog just barked. Company?????? I must go check. See ya'!!!

What Would Thanksgiving Be

...without flames leaping from the edges of the oven door???

It all started out well enough. We awoke to the savory aroma of a nice, juicy turkey that had been slow cooking all night long. Yum! I started the hot rolls so they'd have plenty of time to rise. Then I took a nice, hot bath and washed my hair because I knew there'd be no time for it later. It was a wonderfully relaxing way to start a long, busy day. I'll have to remember it for future Thanksgivings!

I then got to work on the rest of the meal. Everything was going along nicely until it was time to take the turkey out and turn the oven temp up for the green bean casserole and the hot rolls. I don't own a roasting pan and James had bought another mammoth turkey this year. The juice had made its way out of the tight foil wrapping and oozed over the sides of the biggest pan I own, and when I took it out of the oven even more juice dribbled into the bottom of the oven. All was well until I turned the oven up to 350. In just a few moments smoke started pouring out of the oven vent--enough to make your eyes burn and water and your lungs seize up! Ha! We opened doors and windows everywhere and got all the fans going. Sam ran for his gas mask.

HA! Crazy kid! (He told me later, "Mom, if you have any more accidents I'll let you borrow my gas mask!") Smoke was still pouring from the oven and the whole living area was just about filled with it. ("Kids, where are you?! Are you over there somewhere???" Ha!) I was on my way to just turn the oven off when the door sort of popped and I saw the flames shoot out. Very exciting!!! It only lasted a split second, but it was exciting nonetheless. I ran and shut it off, then we opened the door and let the whole thing cool off for a little while. After a few minutes I was able to wipe most of the gunk out of the bottom of the oven, all the while singing the praises of an oven with a hidden coil! No coil in the bottom to get all gross and gunky--it's just nice and smooth down there! DEFINITELY the oven for me!!!

After I got it wiped out we were able to crank it up and continue with our meal plans. It only set us back about 20 minutes, I think, and now we have the great memory of it all to treasure always! :-) The only downer is that the house was full of smoke and smelled a little burned--all for a meal that turned out GREAT! None of the actual food had suffered any injuries, so I still call it a success in spite of the near call to the fire department. ;-)

James got a little picture happy. He even took one of his plate of food, but I'll spare you that one! Here we are with all the fixin's! Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, gravy, corn, green bean casserole, hot rolls, sweet potatoes, pea salad (it's sooooo much better with frozen peas, Mom--I'm never going back!), deviled eggs, and peach-pineapple punch. :-)

We had two pumkpin pies and one apple pie for dessert, but we failed to get pictures of them. The apple pie is a great hit, Mom--in fact it's almost gone. We called and got instructions from James' Mom, who makes just about the only apple pie I've ever actually liked. We also had two pans of cinnamon rolls, although we've already finished the first and are into the second as of tonight!

The worst part about not having friends or family to be with on Thanksgiving (aside from missing out on all the GAMES!) is that there are no other women around to help with the dishes! James and the kids tried to help a little bit, but when you've dirtied every pot and pan in the house it just seems easier to do it yourself than to try to work with people who don't know what they're doing! Still, the clean up wasn't as lengthy has I had expected, so that was nice. I even laid down and took a nap!!! Wa-Hoo!!! I can't remember the last time I got a nap on Thanksgiving--probably not since I've been the Mom! Ha!

As I was sleeping, the rain we were having turned into SNOW! What a perfect day!!! It was very strange though--we were having great big, long, rolling thunder... during the SNOW! Weird, but very cool. It was enough for the kids to go play in, but still not the inches I'm looking for. :-) James took this picture of one of the birdies enjoying the food he's got out there for them...

James, not understanding the purpose of a HOLIDAY, spent most of the afternoon out in the garage building the wall for the boys' room. Half of it, anyway. It was late afternoon before we started dragging in the Christmas boxes from the shed and tearing the house up. I stopped after a while and played Whoonu, Balloon Lagoon and Cariboo with the kids before devotions, then got back to work decorating. I was really struggling to figure out where to put things in this house. I just got it figured out in the last house after 4 years, now I've got to do it all over again! Ha! It's a fun problem to have. There are several things I'm sure will end up changing because they don't look just right to me, but this is some of what we've come up with so far...

James did the tree. That's his baby. In fact, none of the rest of us are allowed to touch it! Ha! The kids get a little mini-tree for their bedrooms that they're allowed to decorate because this is DAD'S TREE and it's not to be messed with! (He's so funny!)

And here's my Merry Christmas tag sign. One of my very favoritest things. (Thank you, Stacey!!!) I LOVE it on the green beadboard. :-)
I spent most of the day today cleaning up the mess we'd made while decorating last night! It was a WRECK. There was all the fall stuff to take out as well as the stuff that usually goes in the living room--all to make room for all those crazy snowmen. Strange, the things we do, isn't it?! Still, it makes us happy. We've been enjoying LOTS of Christmas music while we've been working and that's been great! But James is driving me crazy. We've got a whole bunch of really, really great Christmas CD's... and he keeps listening to the dippy radio station that plays some really great stuff and some really rotten stuff! Why not listen to the stuff we KNOW will be good--that we paid for?! Oh well. He's been a busy guy today, too, so I guess I shouldn't gripe out the dumb music. He's got the other half of the wall framed in out in the garage, the box for the fireplace framed in and a little "step" for it to set on, and I'm pretty sure he'll have the boys' closet framed in by the time he calls it a night. Got to get it all done before...

Dustin & Jamey come on Sunday!!! Wa-Hoooooo!!! I am soooooooo excited! I just love Jamey. And I can even tolerate her husband for the opportunity to be with her! Ha! This means GAMES. Lots and lots of GAMES and food and laughter and some more games and laughter. ~sigh~ It'll probably totally make up for being "alone" on Thanksgiving. :-) Dustin thinks he's coming here to work. James thinks so, too. I've got them both thinking there's some big, legitimate reason for this visit, something about electricity to the garage which will soon be a bedroom and den. All the while it's so I can have PEOPLE! Real, live PEOPLE to be with! People who will come over and play! Wa-hoo!!! :-)

Okay, I've gotta to. I have a regional paper to put together. ~gasp!~ You heard right! The deadline was the 20th (when everybody is supposed to have their stuff to me) and I usually start compiling it right then and have it ready to mail in two or three days. James told me to wait this time. He knew we'd be having company soon and he's decided that he is NOT going to "build" and fold and do all the prep work for mailing all alone again--he's going to schedule printing around company so they can help us! (Now you know, Jamey! Ha!) He REALLY misses having Sam & Tammy nearby to come help. Anyway, that means I've got a whole lot of work to do! But first things first: the BLOG, right?! ;-)

One last picture before I go. This is Sam's latest Darth Vader costume, complete with light saber. I'm tellin' ya', the kid makes EVERYTHING with paper, scissors and tape. (Maybe that will give the Grandma's some gift ideas for Christmas! Ha!)

Okay, gotta run! I hope you all had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving! God is sooooooo good. :-)

The Big Crash

That's what I'm experiencing right now and I just can't seem to recover. Last week I zoomed from one project right into the next trying to get Katie's room all done and somehow I managed it--it's DONE and I love it! But I was running on pure adrenaline a lot of the time and it kept me working well into the night several days in a row. My body started giving out on my there toward the end and I determined to take a nap on Saturday. I slept for over an hour that afternoon, then finished up on the room that night. On Sunday I was EXHAUSTED and took a good, long nap between services that day. Yesterday I managed another little nap. But it's just not working! I am sooooo tired. Until night, of course. That's when I'm rarin' to go. I've always had this weird thing about getting my second wind just at the time I should be calling it a night, but last week's crazy schedule has really thrown me for a loop!

I collected all of the laundry yesterday: 9 loads. It was two weeks worth (no time for laundry last week!), along with some sheets and towels that I unearthed from boxes in the shed. Then last night I realized I had forgotten to get the clothes out of the hamper in our room! That made it 10 loads. I got most of them done yesterday and I managed to clean out the refrigerator. It really needed it. It's amazing how gross it gets!

Today we got up early and headed to Albuquerque to have family pictures taken. We had originally had an appointment on Sunday afternoon, but when we got there and saw the mobs of crabby people who were waiting for their session and how very far behind they were running and when we heard all of the crying babies and chaos coming from the back room... well, we decided it best to reschedule! So we set an appointment for 10:30 this morning. The Sears studio opens at 10:00, so surely they wouldn't be too far behind by 10:30, right??? WRONG. It was crazy. Not as chaotic as Sunday, but still nuts. We waited for the longest time before finally being showed to the room. Our photographer was really nice, but not really all that great at pictures. They were okay, but nothing grand--and every family photo had one kid who's face was partially in a shadow. After our session we waited around for a good 20 or 30 minutes before anyone even took us to the computer to look at our pictures and make our selection! We spent about 3 minutes looking through the pictures and decided that they weren't good enough to spend any extra money on, so we'd use our coupon for the package deal and just pick the best family shot. It took another 10 minutes or so before an employee could help us check out--which process was at least another 10 or 15 minutes! Can you imagine?! We've always done family pictures at Sears and 95% of the time have been THRILLED with the service, the photographer, and the pictures. Of course, this is our first time in Albuquerque. Needless to say, we won't be going back! But with our coupon we only spent $4.99 + tax for 36 pictures of all sizes. Even for pictures that are so-so, that's a great price. It's just the hassle of it all that makes you wonder if it's worth it! Ha!

We finally got out of there sometime after 12:00 and James took us to a nice lunch. After that we headed out to the mountains to go to the library. It had been a few weeks since the kids had gotten new books, so they were really excited. I think we walked out with 32, total.

From there we headed to the Wal-Mart in Edgewood to do our Thanksgiving shopping, along with all of the other shopping we'd been needing to do. Sam was nearly asleep by the time we got there, so we let the sleepy kid ride in the cart. He was sorry by the time we were done! Ha!

Sam wasn't the only one who was sleepy. I was soooooo ready for a nap--by the time we left the picture studio! Ha! I just can't seem to pull myself together and get back into the groove of things. We came home and I immediately put my pj's on. At 4:30! I laid down for just a couple of minutes, then got up and put all the groceries away. I sat down for just a minute, but it was a bad idea! The sleepiness overtook me again and before I knew it I was sprawled out on the couch, sleeping away! James was WONDERFUL and warmed up some left-overs with the kids, then did some school stuff with them. In my state of semi-consciousness I could hear him doing Thanksgiving worksheets with them, then teaching them how to fold a sheet of paper into a cup. He then filled their cups with popcorn and let them watch a creation video from Answers in Genesis. (He ordered several DVDs from them last week and thought the kids would enjoy them, too. GREAT organization with GREAT materials!) I was feeling much better after my evening nap (weird!) and was able to finish up on all of the laundry and even get all of the ironing done. Wa-Hoo! Boy, does THAT feel good! Just in time to start working on Thanksgiving stuff tomorrow. I'm hoping to have a chance to relax and enjoy the holiday a little bit. I got the last two books of the O'Malley series from Sister Galaviz on Sunday, but I have no business opening them until I get a few more things under control. Still, having the laundry and ironing taken care of gets me one big step closer! Maybe by this weekend... :-)

Okay, some pictures before I go! Nothing in particular this time, just kids. :-) Looks like Katie was checking out Grace's blog.

Usually the kids sit at the chuckwagon table to do school, but I let Joe sit on the couch to work on his book report yesterday. He was supposed to choose a bird to write about and he picked the cassawary. It's one CRAZY bird, I tell ya'!

And this is how Sam came to school yesterday!

These are some pictures Katie drew after watching the new Pirates Who Don't Do Anything movie. I like Pa Grape, Mr. Lunt and Robert the Terrible the best.

And here's Katie, always the lady, enjoying a new library book tonight.

And here's how I found Sam sleeping when I went to check on the kids a little while ago. New red sweatshirt, pirate pants, and Santa hat. And he insists on sleeping on the rug instead of in the queen bed with Joe. They fight over the blankets up there, so he just hits the floor!

And that's all the news from here. Oh, wait--Katie lost another tooth last week and Joe's lot a loose one. And Katie and Sam both acquired bikes this last week! They've been working hard and saving money. Sam used most of his birthday money to buy a bike for himself and has been LOVING it. Kate didn't have very much money, so James took what she had and paid for the rest himself. He showed up with a bike for her yesterday. I guess he got tired of hearing that she'd rented Joe's bike for a dollar an hour over and over again! Ha! Okay, I think THAT'S all the news. :-)

The Bad Commenter

That's me! I had been working on being better about that, but I've been a pretty good failure at it this past week, I think. I actually haven't been able to read the blogs as much as I'd like. I took time to sit down and blog myself, mostly because it was good therapy for me in the midst of the chaos! Anyway, now that I've finally conquered "that stinkin' room" and it has transformed into "that beautiful room," I hope to get back to normal life. I hope it means I'll be out visiting my friends and family in Blogland more. :-)

I've also been failing to answer some of the comments on my own blog, if that's not pitiful. I would do it under the "comment" section like you're supposed to, except it's been so long that I'm pretty sure none of you would ever find them and know that I answered you anyway! So here we go...

Sister Pam -- To add a blog list to your blog... If you go to where you usually create a new post for your blog, click on the tab at the top that says "layout." That should take you to the "page elements" section. Click on "add a gadget," then on "Blog List." From there, you click "Add to List," then copy over the web address of the blog you want to add. You can rename it if you'd like, and select the options that you prefer. I think that's it!

Rachel -- OOPS!!! I just remembered about the paint colors! I'll try real hard to remember it again when I wake up (!) and try to get that info to you. ;-)

Mom -- I think the checks on the wallpaper are 1/2" to 3/4". Still much bigger than the last gingham paper we had--and sooooo much easier to match up! As for your plan for making the twin bed into a stunning day bed, I'm all for it! You can work on that next time you come out--I'm DONE with it! Ha! As for the empty frame, we have a great plan for it, but I don't want to share just yet. Just think: Grandma Bunny! ;-)

Amy Dyer -- Don't worry about not commenting, especially on MY blog! (I'm the world's WORST commenter, you know!) I have noticed your absense and was glad to see you posted something new the other day. I'm going to take the time to READ it real soon and I'll try to let you know when I finally did. Ha! To answer your question... right now the boys are sharing the big bed and Katie will use the twin. Once they move into their own room (which I don't want to talk about--it means more WORK!) Kate will be able to choose which bed she'd like to have. Fun!

Jamey -- I am SOOOOO excited to have you guys come and I'm SOOOOO excited that I have a NICE place for you to stay now instead of that awful pink and blue room and that disgusting bathroom you've had to use before! Besides that, I am SOOOOOOOOOO ready for some fun and games. You'll be here tomorrow, right?! I'm READY!!! ;-)

Sister McMahon -- Wow! Who knew?! Welcome! I stop by your blog on occasion, too. :-) And NO, I am NOT like the Energizer Bunny. My battery has DEFINITELY stopped going!!!

Sister Tammi -- I figured somebody would enjoy the picture of James sitting in the corner! Ha! He was actually working his way around the room removing all of the baseboards so I could get to work. But the picture cracks me up!

Tammy -- I would LOVE to come help you redo your kitchen and bedroom. Just not this year! Ha! Hope you're having a GREAT time in Washington. Have you won anything on the Wii???

Libby -- From a comment you left way back there somewhere (!), tell Johnny he won the Christmas war. As I recall, he and Jon were the ones who convinced me years ago that Christmas music was to be enjoyed only after Thanksgiving. I used to start way early and the guys would gripe like crazy. For some reason, I actually listened to them on that one (ha!) and have been a staunch "save it until the right time and you'll enjoy it twice as much" booster. ;-)

Sister Nowling -- You're right, the "what's next" question could earn you a swift kick just like asking a woman who's just given birth how many more kids she wants. ;-)

Emilee, Amy, Charity, Sister Marcia, Kasey--and anybody else that I might have accidentally overlooked while sifting through the old comments, THANKS! I enjoy the complements, but I really just enjoy having a nice place for my kids and my company instead of that CRAZY ugliness we had before. :-) And you're all welcome to come and stay! That purty little guest room is there for friends and family, so give me a call and I'll start scheduling you in! :-)

~whew~ Hope I didn't miss anything! I spent way too long trying to tweek my blog tonight (I love the 3 column thing, but I've got real issues because of it and I'm not smart enough to figure them out!), otherwise I would have made the rounds and starting amending my commentless ways. Maybe tomorrow. Or the next day. Or... ;-)

Ta-Da!!!!!!!!!

Here are a bunch of before and after shots. Too tired to discuss it at the moment though! Ha! Hope you all have a GREAT Sunday and your services are full of God's blessings. G'night, all!

Today Was the Day!!!

The grand and glorious day to rebuild Katie's room! The day to assemble all of the furniture and discover what it's proper placement would be. The day to unpack the mystery boxes labeled "Katie's Room" that held who knows what cute decor. (They've been packed for nearly a year now!) The day to get the kids moved back into that room and out of our room. The day to celebrate all we've accomplished and that I can now enter back into normal life! Wa-Hooooo!!!

You know, of course, that none of that actually happened. But the thought of it all was so grand!

Today... Let me explain. No, there is too much; let me sum up. ;-) Yesterday. Yesterday was the day to polyurethane the log furniture that I had stained earlier in the week: a queen bed, a dresser, a mirror, and two nightstands. I actually rescheduled the horse lesson so that I could continue working because I wanted to get it DONE! Then we up and decided to head to Albuquerque a few hours early for church so we'd be able to do some necessary running around. We needed to return some wallpaper and other things to Lowe's--$40 worth. That always feels good. :-) Then we went to several furniture stores in search of some "options." All we discovered is that there's nothing we really like and the prices are outrageous. So in the end it felt like I had quit my polyurethaning early totally in vain--we had found NOTHING. Well... I did pick up some cute "fall" blocks for $3 (80% off) at Hobby Lobby. Hardly worth it!

We had BTI service at Sister Grimes' house, then enjoyed some green chili stew, lemon pie, banana pie, and red jell-o that Pat had made for us. That woman! She's determined to make us all very, very fat.

We came home and I donned my work clothes yet again. I finally finished getting everything poly-ed and took a nice hot bath afterwards. I needed it!

This morning was the FUN day! Or at least that was the plan. While the kids were plugging away at school I went into "that stinkin' room" to begin the clean up. I collected all of the tools and stuff to go to the garage, then started peeling the plastic up off of the floor and scrubbing all of those tiles real good--getting ready for the great move-in.

We stopped for lunch and I remembered just in time that I had scheduled the horse lessons for today at 1:00! We jumped in the car and got there right on time. :-)

Came home and put the work clothes on AGAIN and finished clearing and scrubbing the floor. James had been staining and installing baseboard trim in the room and painting and installing the trim to frame the blue wall. After that we got to work on the doors and windows, working with a razor and a bottle of Goo-Gone to remove all of the tape and sticker residue that was EVERYWHERE. Ooooooh, that makes me mad. Why do people DO things like that?! We got them all taken care of and stained and they look so much better. :-)

We finished that, then James took Katie to town for a father/daughter dinner... and to pick up the blinds for her window! Meanwhile, the boys cleaned up their toys and clothes, then helped me assemble Katie's bed. I threw some Totino's in the oven and got to work dragging out the "Katie's Room" boxes. I stopped at watched a few Looney Toons with the boys while we ate, then let them finish the DVD while I went back to work. I went out to the shed with a flashlight (we need some electricity out there, Dustin!) and was able to find a few things for Katie's room, but not everything I was looking for. Most importantly, I've got all of this cute stuff... but no shelves to put it on! Most of the shelves were packed together and couldn't unearth that box. ~sigh~ So much for getting the room finished tonight!

In the meantime, James made it home and got to work hanging the new blinds. I decided to go do some cleaning since the whole house was TRASHED. I mean really, really trashed!!! My Dad would say it was ugly with a capital UG. I figured it was time to wade through our bedroom and start cleaning it out. I gathered all of the kid JUNK that will be returning to Katie's room (clothes, books, a few toys) and threw it out the bedroom door into the living room. The only things that remained in our room were their sleeping bags and pillows--for one last night. I got the floor vacuumed and everything taken care of except my desk. I'll have to take care of it later.

I put the kids to bed and got back to work on the house. Ah yes... James and I have been discussing our options for Kate's room. We really wanted to put a day bed in there along with the queen bed so there would be plenty of beds for company when they come, ideally with a trundle bed that could be pulled out from under the day bed. It would be PERFECT and the room is actually large enough to pull it off. But in our furniture shopping yesterday we discovered that day beds are hard to find nowadays and they are WAY too expensive. Even the metal frame for the trundle is nearly $200!!! Can you imagine?! There is NO WAY I'm paying $200 for a metal frame with springs and wheels! CRAZY. So I casually mentioned to James tonight another option I that had occurred to me. "We could consider using one of the boys' beds in here instead. We could paint it the same color blue as the wall and then scuff it up like we did the cabinet in the bathroom. It wouldn't be as pretty as a day bed, but it would fill the need and it would still but cute--and it would cost us nothing; we already have the bed and the paint." Does that sound like a suggestion to you? I meant it as just that. A suggestion. An idea. A possibility to be considered sometime in the future. Next thing I know I'm out in the garage painting a bed blue! WHY, you may ask? I can answer in one simple word.

CHOLERIC.

;-) In the end, I guess I'm glad. It solved our bedding problem and cost us nothing--and it's one less thing I'll have to do in the coming days or weeks. And I invented a new sport: Speed Painting!!! I figured since we're planning on scratching some of the paint off anyway it wasn't necessary for things to be perfect, so I slopped that paint on just as fast as I could. I think I had two coats on the whole bed in just under two hours. Go me!

It was 10:30 when I walked back into my house and saw how disgusting it was. I knew I couldn't face waking up to it like that in the morning, so I got to work. Kitchen first. It took a while! (I'm telling you, the whole house was DEEP!) Then I went to Katie's room and cleaned out the closet so I could make room for all of the things that would need to go back in there. I moved Katie AND the boys into the "new" dresser in her room and filled up a trash bag with who-knows-what-all from the closet as I was cleaning. Came up with another bag of clothes to pass along to Emilee and Haley. Oh, I can't remember what all I did. I just know that I got Kate's room as clean as it can get until I find shelves so I can get all the cute stuff off the bed and floor and onto the walls where it belongs. I've got a clean kitchen to wake up to in the morning and I even managed to get most of the rest of the house clean, with only the necessary exceptions: some things to sort through and put away in the chuckwagon table tomorrow, a pile of laundry on the floor (I've GOT to do laundry!), and the now blue bed sitting in by the fire to dry. Otherwise, everything is GREAT! I was running 90 mph trying to get the house put back together and, for the most part, I managed it. I've made a terrible habit of being up way, way, way too late this week, but I can get the most accomplished at night. It's when there are no interruptions and it's when I usually get a big surge of gumption. Tomorrow I am taking a NAP. I think I've earned one. :-) I was still wired after I finished cleaning, so I figured I'd blog now--there will be no time tomorrow. But now that I've been sitting for a few minutes all of the adrenaline has worn off and I'm quite ready for bed. So I'm going there!

Pictures soon--I promise!

I'm Here

...because anybody dumb enough to stay up working until 1:00 AM is obviously dumb enough to go ahead and stay up 'til 1:30 blogging.

It's been a good, productive day around here! Wa-Hoo! It feels good to have days like that, but more than anything it feels good to know that each step is one step closer to being DONE! James has promised me that after we finish up in Katie's room I can be all done with projects until after Christmas. (Except for if he "needs help" with something he's working on. I hate those pesty little disclaimers!!!)

Anyway, the day started out good this morning. I made waffles for breakfast and they were extra good because it's been so long since we've had them. :-) We had good devotions, then the kids had about 30 minutes to play before we started school. Somehow we managed to finish school up by about 1:00 this afternoon! Wa-Hoo!!! So I headed outside with the stain and a rag and got to work on James' office. It took quite a while longer than expected because of all the trim. It's rough cedar and just soaks the stain in instead of letting you spread it.

I enjoyed getting some fresh air, for a change. And it was great because I was able to be out with the kids and enjoy them playing. Katie and Joe started a new club today. (They create at least one new one each week.) They told me they were the Nerd Club. "How fitting," I said. I asked what they did in the Nerd Club and they said they sell Nerds so they'll have money to buy more Nerds. They were referring to the candy Nerds, of course, but I found it intensely amusing that they weren't the least bit ashamed of telling people they were the Nerd Club. Kate said they do a lot of other things, too, but she didn't have time to explain it all to me because they were off to find the perfect hiding place for their secret headquarters.

I finally finished up with the stain and went to grab the ole' caulking gun. I haven't used one of those in years. Made me feel like a teenager again, caulking Janice Yalch's big log house up the hill for $5 an hour or whatever she paid me! Good memories. :-) Anyway, the sun dropped behind the hill not too long after I got started and it got very, very cold on my wet and caulky hands. I was really, really wanting to get that nasty job behind me today, but I decided I'd wait and hope it's a little warmer tomorrow. :-(

We had another nutritious, homecooked meal by Mom tonight. Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Again. Seems like we don't get real meals very often anymore--and when we do most of them have been made my James! ~sigh~ I really want to be a Mom again. I want to just clean my little floors and cook my little meals and wash my little dishes and school my little kids... Maybe next week will be my week, hu?!

After dinner I headed back to Katie's room, which I've begun to refer to as "that stinkin' room," and touched up the paint around the edges of the ceiling and the old grubby ceiling fan. Then James was able to install the new fan! Wa-Hoo!!! I took this picture while it was going full blast, so it's not perfectly clear--but still, I was impressed with my camera!

And then it was time. Time for the last big project on the room itself. (Although there is still furniture to work on...) The wallpaper. I think it took me just shy of 6 hours, start to finish. I'm not real proud of that. It seems like it should take a lot less time than that. I mean, I only did the bottom three feet of the walls! But that's how these things go. Especially when you've "had it," as I have. Ah yes, I finally hit "the end" today. The I'm-DONE-with-all-these-crazy-projects-and-just-want-to-get-back-to-normal-life-again phase. I'm sure you hadn't detected that prior to this statement though. ;-) Besides that, I hurt. My knees are killing me and I hate this tile floor more than I ever have before--which was a lot. I now hate the knee pads, too. Wearing them is less painful than not wearing them, but the straps dig into the back of my knees and create soreness in one of the few areas of my anatomy that previously had none. My back hurts, my hips hurt (explain that one to me--and I'm only 31 so it can't be AGE yet! Ha!), my neck hurts from all the over-my-head work and my right arm, wrist and hand are screaming "STOP!!!! Don't make me pick up that paint brush! Or that roller! --And especially not that rag to rub stain on 87 cubic feet of raw wood!!!!!!"

Where was I? Australia. (Truly, you have a dizzying intellect. --Wait 'til I get going!!!) Anyway, the wallpapering was a success, even though it took longer than it should have and the first wall gave me fits with the "level" line. (I was about half a bubble off plumb by the time I was finished, Mom! Ha!) I told James early on that it was going to take a good, cold Vanilla Coke and some good, happy music to see me through. He was very obliging. :-)

Here's the finished product against the faux painted wall...

And against the blue wall. YES! I said BLUE!!! Wa-Hoo!!! Corduroy Black finally looks it's proper dark blue color now that I've got everything else in place. I'm sooooooo happy. I'm just not the kind of person to go for black walls, you know?! It was supposed to be blue (in spite of it's nerve-racking name) and now it finally is. It just needed the right encouragement, I guess. :-)

And here's where the two walls meet. Don't look too closely--we have a great plan for making that corner look fantastic with a nice, straight line separating the two colors instead of the squiggly one there now. We'll get to that real soon! And HONESTLY, the seams you see in the wallpaper are NOT that bad in person! Ha!

~whew~ That's it, folks. Another day or two and I'll be able to put the room back together and actually DECORATE it! Wa-Hoo!!! It will be so fun to dig into the "Kate's Bedroom" boxes and see what all we don't know we have anymore. :-)

Progress???

Can this be referred to as progress???

Strangely enough, the "after" picture looks worse than the "before" this time! Ha! The darker wood just makes it look dirty or something in the picture. It really is nice in person. ;-) I may have mentioned some time back that James bought a really fantastic log bed for our room at a really, really fantastic price. So our furniture (above) is going to be the furniture for Katie's room/the guest room. We liked it natural in our room, but James thought it would look better stained Special Walnut in Katie's room, to match all of the other wood there. So that's what I did today. ALL DAY. I couldn't believe how long it took!!! It was SUCH a pain. It is SO much easier to work on Granddaddy's wood than this stuff!!! (Or maybe it's just been so long that I didn't remember how awful it is?) The dresser was absurd, but at least it's all done now. For a couple of days anyway. Then I'll either poly it or wax it, not sure which yet.

So while I was busy in the work room (did you notice I gave you a peek at my "black" wall?!) James played Mom all day. Again! He's been doing that a lot lately, it seems. Anything to keep me going on the projects at hand, I guess! He did school with the kids today and let them watch a show or two. Last night he made a stromboli and some fettucini alfredo, then whipped up some homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. Tonight he decided to clear somethings out of the freezer, so the menu consisted of corn dogs, pizza, taquitos and french fries. I had worked right through the lunch break and never stopped today, so my pizza and fries tasted GREAT! Besides the fact that it was one of those little mini-pizzas from Schwan's. That's what I used to eat when I'd be working on wood with Grandmother at the cabin all those years ago. I had to smile at the coincidence.

After dinner James decided the kids needed a little dessert. He never just plops dessert in a dish for the kids, he always makes some sort of art out of it. Tonight it was neopolitan bugs of some sort with cookie legs and whipped cream and M&M eyes. I think somebody's even had a candy corn stinger.

And... I can't believe I'm posting this picture. I'm so embarrassed!!! But since I'm taking you all along with me on this crazy house remodel, I thought it only fair that you suffer through this part as well. This is what our room is looking like now...

The kids and all their STUFF have moved into our room and there's just no place to put anything (kids included) until I finish up Kate's room and get them OUT OF HERE. We now have mattresses on the floor and are using the boys' dresser. (I moved their stuff into a suitcase today and our stuff into their dresser so I could stain our old/Kate's new dresser. Follow that?) Anyway, it's a WRECK. And I didn't get nearly as much done today as I had hoped. Naturally. Tomorrow I've got some work to do outside (caulking and staining), then maybe I'll get a chance to touch up the paint in Kate's room and who knows--maybe even get to the next project. I'm not banking on it though. I know how things go around here! Ha!

I Paint, Therefore I Am..

...sitting in the middle of this.

No, really--that's where I am. Not quite in the MIDDLE, I guess, but here nonetheless. Leaning against a wall, clicking away on the laptop, waiting for the primer to dry. You thought I was all done with the primer, didn't you? Yeah, so did I. I myself am often surprised at life's little quirks. ;-)

Just so you know, "Corduroy Black" really does look black when you put it on a wall. Imagine that!!! Are you all gasping in disbelief??? Well, it's true. I chose Corduroy Black for one wall in this room. I was scared to take a picture of it for fear it might look black in the picture, too. Upon seeing it on the wall, I decided that perhaps only HALF of the wall should be painted that color. (This is gettin' better all the time, hu?! HA!) So now I'm having to go back and prime over the crazy blue color that was on the half of the wall that I've decided will now NOT be Corduroy Black. Gotta cover over that crazy blue before I can do anything else.

Hang on a sec...

Okay, I'm back. Had to go put a second coat of primer on the half black wall. It will definitely need a third and then some touch up, just like all the other walls had to have. ~sigh~ Should've known. So I thought I'd blog while I'm waiting in between coats. Hhmmm. I just realized I COULD be painting the edges around the ceiling right now... Oh well. Next time I get up.

So today was a pretty good day around here, believe it or not. I got off to a late start, but it all turned out okay. I didn't finish up with the kids' school until sometime after 4:00, so that means I didn't pick up a paint roller until about 5:00. I was able to get the ceiling all painted, then the paint on three of the walls. Then I started on the Corduroy Black wall, but I got scared and chickened out--that's why I'm priming the bottom half now. (I had left it that crazy blue color on that one wall because I thought it would be easier to cover blue with Corduroy Black than to cover white primer with Corduroy Black.) If I ever get that crazy blue primed over--and trim around the ceiling--I'm done for the day. And all I was planning on accomplishing today was the ceiling! Wa-Hoo! So even with the emergency "Yikes!!! I have a BLACK wall!!! What have I done?!?!?" panic, I'm still getting more done than I thought I was going to. And, crazy as it sounds, I think I'm going to LOVE it. But you can't possibly see the glory of it until everything is finished and perhaps even decorated. So until then I'll just have to leave you all thinking I'm a total ninny, painting over crazy pink and blue walls... with BLACK!

So the only pictures I have for you are these.

Don't you wish you could relax like that?! I do! It looks mighty good right about now, I tell ya'! Well, I'm off to trim the ceiling, then slop a third coat of paint on the crazy blue/crazy black wall. :-)

Or as Dustin Hays would say,

"CHICK! CHICK!"
