Posting to the Weekend Crowd

Hi, Mom!

(Nobody does the blog thing on weekends!)

It's been a good week around here. James and I are feeling lots better this week, so that helps! We had a good church service on Thursday night to kick off our ABM Outreach Week. Our Regional ABM Coordinator, Brother VanDeventer, has asked all of our churches to spend January 9-15 in prayer and fasting and reaching out to people who used to be members of the Church but are now backslidden or unfaithful. So in our service on Thursday we made a list of all those in our area we'd like to reach out to and had a good season of prayer for them, and for ourselves as we attempt to contact them and invite them back to church and to the Lord. I'm excited to see what the results will be from around the Region through this effort. It's so much in harmony with the General theme, "Making a Difference Through Prayer & Fasting" and it sounds like there's been great excitement over it. Fasting is never fun, but it's one of God's WAYS and He's sure to bless us when we're willing to make sacrifices for the sake of lost souls.

Yesterday was a long--but really great--day. Ah, yes. First of all, let me PRAISE GOD for how very good He is to us. We had a need and didn't know how it was going to be supplied. But God miraculously took care of it WAY beyond what was actually needed. We had been praying and weren't surprised that He answered, but were shocked at how far above and beyond He answered! He is just so good to us. :-)

Anyway, we headed to town at about 2:30 yesterday to hit all of the amazing sales. There were a whole bunch of good ones at different grocery stores, but only if you bought whole cases. Because of God's goodness and blessings, we were able to do just that! It seems a little crazy to do such a thing until you add up the hundreds of dollars that you're saving to buy those quantities at these prices. Our grocery bill should go WAY down for the next several months now and that makes me very happy. :-)

We also went to Sam's Club to pick up my contacts that we FINALLY ordered. I've been wearing the free trial ones since October. I intend to wear this set a while longer before opening up the new ones. Why move on when these ones are still doing the trick?!

After all of our running around it was finally time to head up north to the Clarksons' house for Sadie's birthday party. Her birthday was actually about a week ago, but they were out of town and unable to do the party then. Our kids were soooooooo excited! They haven't been to a PARTY in years other than their own. And to be quite honest, their "parties" usually consist of cake, ice cream, and a few gifts, often with just the 5 of us! So they were THRILLED at the thought of going to a true blue birthday party and they all worked for days ahead of time to make gifts for Sadie. :-)

Here are the girls in their party dresses with their party tiaras, boas, and glow-stick sceptres.

And the boys looking very boyish.
Sadie blowing out the candles
I had to post this picture because it's the only one I had of Sadie actually smiling instead of cheesing out for the camera! Ha!
I won't post pictures of all of her gifts, but I'll post pictures of the ones my kids made her because... well, because it's my blog! :-)

Here's the trio of gifts from Katie

A pot holder and a little parrot from Joe
And a super cool butterfly from Sam
After cake, ice cream, and presents, it was time to play Pin the Tail on the Donkey. First time my kids had ever played. (Sad, hu?!) It's an okay game for the kids, but a BLAST for the parents who get to watch! HA! So funny. Here's the birthday girl, a little off course... Ha!
And Cainan a little turned around as well...
Naomi having trouble
And more trouble when James decided to get involved. (I love Brother Chris' face in this picture!)
Katie had a plan going into the game. She had studied the picture and knew just about how far away the donkey's tail was from that particular crease in the paper. Pretty clever! She won the Cube of Rubic as a prize and was THRILLED... but has been super frustrated ever since. Those things are a lot harder to master than kids (and most adults) realize!
Then they played this Tic-Tac-Toe game. We went through several rounds, but it was clear that nobody was actually going to get three in a row, so they just gave the prize to the kid who got the most balls on the mat regardless of their position. Joe happened to pull it off and won a Wall-E puzzle that he enjoyed putting together this afternoon.
Katie played a game of Battleship with Brother Chris, the girls played princess stuff upstairs, the adults hung out and talked, and Joe & Cainan set up action figures and tried to shoot all of the other kid's guys down first.

We stayed for a long time and had a great time. The kids had so much fun, Sadie seemed to be pleased with her party, and I enjoyed the fellowship. We didn't make it home until about 10:30 and I was soooooo tired. But there was chicken and pork chops to be separated and frozen (we're going to get 6 meals out of a giant pack of chops that we paid $10.98 for--I can't tell you how happy that makes me!) and cases of corn, green beans, four different flavors of soup, Ramen, chili, fruit... Maybe some other stuff, I can't remember. Our pantry is bursting at the seams and I'm a little concerned about the shelves holding up, but so far so good. As I was adding up what we paid for all of this stuff and figuring out what we might have for meals, I was sooooo excited to realize that most meals that we'll be eating will cost less than $3 (some less than $2 or maybe even less) to feed our whole family. WA-HOO!!! I feel so THRIFTY. :-)

Today has been a strange day. Regular schooling and all of that, but this morning we got some news that sort of threw us for a loop and I ended up spending a lot of time on the phone and in prayer. While I was praying the Scripture came to me about the disciples being on the boat with Jesus, in a panic over the storm. When they woke him up in a frenzy He said to them, "Why are ye so fearful, oh, ye of little faith?" I felt like that's what He said to me today. After all of the things He's done, why let fear grip your heart now?! Being human is such a pain sometimes! ;-) I really felt Him give me peace and have felt better and better throughout the day, though still praying lots for this particular situation. I don't know how people cope with life when they don't have God to lean on and bear their burdens. We don't realize how blessed we are.

James took Sam with him to run errands today, so I let Katie & Joe watch the Veggie version of Gideon this afternoon. We'd been reading about Gideon in the Bible the past few days and wanted to watch it in vegetable form. :-) I LOVE the "marching band" style music in that show--very emotionally charged. And, of course, who wouldn't enjoy Lance the Turtle?!

Since I seemed caught up on all of the big things, I sat down and finished my book. I've been reading Mistaken Identity this week. It's the true story about some kids from a Christian collage who were in a terrible accident; five died and three survived. But the paramedics got two of the girls' identities mixed up and, due to the nature of the accident and the injuries--and the girls' similarities (same hair type and color, same color eyes, same body form, etc.)--it wasn't discovered for 5 weeks. So while one family had a funeral and were grieving and trying to cope with losing the daughter they THOUGHT was dead, another family was spending 24/7 at the bedside of the girl they thought was their own... Only to learn after 5 weeks that their daughter had died the night of the accident and they'd been caring for someone else. And the family who thought their daughter had died received a phone call a month after they'd buried "her" saying that she's still alive. AMAZING. I cried a lot, but must say that I was blessed. You could tell by the way these families responded to a-a-a-a-all of the things that they went through that they really were Christians. Their faith and hope in God seemed like the real thing. It makes you think about life and how fragile it is; how quickly things can change and how important it is to have your priorities right your treasures in heaven, not on earth.

Katie has weird teeth. They don't just get loose and then fall out like normal kids. When one of her teeth is beginning its departure, it starts sticking farther and farther straight out--even if it's still tightly secured to her gums! It will get crazier and crazier for months before finally getting loose. She's had one that has been so bad she could barely close her mouth (ha!) and it's finally started loosening up a little bit, so James has been having her work on it as much as possible to get it ready to go. (It really needed to go so her big front tooth would have room to move into place a little better.) Tonight was her lucky night! She doesn't have the guts to pull out her own teeth, no matter how loose they are--and she PANICS at the thought of her Dad doing it (I don't blame her!!!)--so that leaves me to do the dirty work. We've done the string method a few times before and it's always worked like a charm. James caught the whole procedure on film this time. Ha!

A strange thing happened, though. When Kate said she was ready and I gave a yank, there was more resistance than usual (it actually hurt her a little bit this time--I felt so bad!) and we heard a small "clank" in the opposite direction of what I was pulling... and we never did find the tooth! Ha! We crawled all over the floor and looked and looked, but to no avail.

Since she had nothing to hide under her pillow, the "Tooth Fairy" decided to just go ahead and take her her money right then. :-)
And here's the happy girl showing off her new hole.

That's about it from around here. Oh, except for this. I filmed it during devotions tonight. I figured some day it would make me smile to look back on Joe's early days learning to play guitar. :-)

I really WANNA post

... but not tonight! It's been a loooooooong day. We were gone for over 8 hours this afternoon/evening, got home at 10:30, put the kids to bed, spent the next hour rearranging the pantry because we are sooooooooooooooo well stocked with groceries right now after a big blessing straight from God and needed to make room for all of the cases (yes, cases) of new food, finally finished in the kitchen at 11:30, and now I'm beat. I'm going to read a little bit, then call it a night. I'll blog tomorrow. I hope. :-)

Soooooooo Tired

But a little birdie told me today that it's been four days since I blogged. Actually, it was a rather large, cantankerous birdie who gets a little agitated when you don't blog for four days. ;-) Either way, here I am!

I know this sounds ridiculous, but that's only because it is: I've been cleaning my living room for three whole days. No, wait... Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. Four days. I finally FINISHED at 11:00 tonight and I must say that it feels WONDERFUL to have everything so fresh and sparkly clean in there and the rest of the house put back together too, for the most part. The plan was to do this deep cleaning one room at a time until I completed the whole house. Ain't happenin'. I'd rather live in a less that perfect house and have a LIFE and not the CHAOS and MESS that occurs when you're cleaning like that (furniture pulled out, everything off the walls and scattered hither and yon)--I just can't handle any more of it! At least for a while. Maybe I could just do one room a month or something like that. It would take me a year to finish the house, then it would be time to start again. Nah... I think I'll just scrap any immediate plans to put myself and my family through such craziness again. I'll just go sit in the one super clean room and be happy. :-)

I haven't JUST been cleaning, of course. We've been doing school and the regular stuff, too. I made elk steaks for dinner last night and ham and beans tonight. I got all the laundry done yesterday, though I've not gotten to the ironing yet. I got ALL of the Christmas stuff packed up and hauled out to the shed and put into place on Saturday. It's amazing how many trips to the shed it amounts to. Then James went to Hobby Lobby and found some great stuff at 80% off, so we filled yet another Christmas box and took it out, too. And it's really not true to say that I took ALL of the Christmas stuff. All except for the items I missed. Like the little red bows that were tied to the light fixture above the dining table, a few Santa hats... and a 3 foot long "Deck the Halls" sign that was on the wall. How do you miss something like that?! Oh, well.

We had a really great Sunday. I taught the kids' Sunday School class and we talked about salvation and sanctification. We washed pennies and got them clean and germ free, but they were still sort of brown looking. So we polished them and got rid of the brown. (Get it?) Of course, I didn't tell them that what we were polishing them with is called Bar Keeper's Friend! Ha! Didn't seem like it would be a very good comparison to the blood of Jesus. ;-) Then we talked about the scriptures that speak of being "as white as snow" and being "whiter than snow." We made a neat little snow page with a snowflake made out of q-tips and wrote the scripture and used lots of glitter for the word SNOW at the bottom. Can you believe it?! I let them use GLITTER!!! I don't think I've done that in at least a year--that stuff gets everywhere! Still, it's better than Play-Doh. Anyway, we had great discussion during the class and I think maybe it will stick with them. I remember Cece Martinez teaching my Sunday School class when I was about 8 years old and washing pennies and talking about how NOTHING can get our hearts clean except for Jesus. :-)

Brother Chris preached a great message (on the prophecies in Daniel--and I "got it"! Whoa!!!) and Sister Shanda taught a great lesson in her WMB service that night. I love it when I can REMEMBER what we learned in Church. My memory is soooooo poor, but there have been so many good things lately that they're sticking with me better.

Aside from church, Sunday was also great because I got a fantastic Sunday afternoon nap, and then finished my new 1,000 piece puzzle that night. What a great day! And it was a nice break in the midst of the tearin' up jack in the living room. :-)

Hhmmm. That's about it. Nothing much going on. I know the kids have been quite entertaining, but can't remember how. I do remember how flustered Joe was the other day when he found out that mouthwash has alcohol in it. James bought some kid mouthwash and makes the kids use it and Joe just about DIED to think that he had in any way partaken of alcohol. His eyes immediately welled up with tears and he frantically said, "But, Mom, I'm SURE some of it stays in my mouth after I spit it out--and I'm SURE I've swallowed it!!! Alcohol is a SIN!!!!!" It took quite a bit of doing for me to convince him that he had NOT sinned, but he still didn't get full relief until James assured him later that the kid mouthwash doesn't have alcohol after all. That kid. ;-)

Happy New Year!

I couldn't think of a good title, so I just used the one that everybody else out there will surely be using.

It's been a lazy sort of a week around here. James and I have both had a cold for several days. Thank you, Joe. ;-) Joe was kind enough to share his cold with both of us AND my Mom and Dad. Anyway, things have been pretty sluggish around here because of it. We haven't been sick in bed, just stuffy and groggy and not very productive. We have managed to stay on top of school, laundry and ironing. Until today--the kids played in the snow for most of the day and we never got to school. They'll make up for it tomorrow, on SATURDAY. Bwa-hahahahaha! :-)

We made a trip to the library on Wednesday 'cause the kids thought they were going to die if they didn't get new books to read. Then we went into town for a major shopping trip at Sam's Club. We stocked up on toilet paper and napkins, and dish tabs and oh, I don't know what all. Enough to make our cart look like a mountain on wheels. When we got home I spent the next hour and a half cleaning out the pantry and other closet to make room for everything. It feels GREAT to be well stocked and to have everything put away in its proper place.

Yesterday, this is what we woke up to. :-) It's the best snow we've ever gotten here. About 4 1/2 inches. Not huge, but enough to make things really pretty and enough to make me really happy. :-)

The kids have spent a LOT of time playing in the snow and having a blast. If I hadn't been feeling crummy I'm pretty sure I would have joined them!

Everybody has been doing their part to eat the Christmas left-overs, but you can only do it so many days, you know? So yesterday I used a bunch of the turkey and made a big pot of turkey and noodles. It was so good, especially for the semi-sicko's.

We didn't do much celebrating last night. We were planning a New Year's Eve service at church but it had to be cancelled, so we just stayed home and took it easy. I worked on my new puzzle for a while (very fun so far, Mom--wish you were here!) and we let the kids stay up and watch Up. I just can't bring myself to let them stay up until midnight, New Year's Eve or not. What are they going to DO all that time?! So when the movie went off we sent them to bed, at 10:00 or so. James lasted until 11:00, then I chatted with my cousin for the next hour. Not real exciting, but quietly enjoyable. Would have RATHER been with PEOPLE playing GAMES, right Tammy??? Maybe next year. -- Not that I didn't THOROUGHLY enjoy chatting with my cousin, of course. (Had to throw that in there in case she reads this. Ha!)

Today I did something I can't remember doing in YEARS. I stayed in my pj's all day long! It started because the bathrooms were both occupied and I couldn't take my shower as planned. Then after devotions I got busy cleaning the kitchen, then spontaneously decided it was time to take the Christmas stuff down and get the house back to normal. HA. I really should have waited until next week. The house is TRASHED and I'm not sure it's going to look any better tomorrow night, then we've got Church the next day. It wouldn't be a big deal except that this is the time of year when I REALLY clean everything. Sweep ceilings and walls for cobwebs, clean fans and light fixtures, lemon oil all of the wood, move all of the furniture so the baseboards can be cleaned and tile floor scrubbed and all that jazz. Well, today I got one wall done. Ha! I've started packing up the Christmas stuff, spent a considerable amount of time oiling the piano and shelves on that wall, then vacuumed the chair that goes on that wall and scrubbed the floor over there. The REST of the room, however... Well, it's not just real purty! I'm hoping I can get more done tomorrow than I think I can!

Anyway, I ended up just cleaning in my pj's all day long. Then this evening I took a shower and put on some fresh pj's. Crazy! I really feel like getting DRESSED now, but that would be pretty silly. I'll DEFINITELY be ready for some real clothes by morning!

I made a terrible cheesy ham and potato casserole tonight. Trying to get rid of some more left-overs, you know! Actually, James and I really liked it, but it would've been better as a side than a main dish. The kids weren't too thrilled. I must admit it didn't look too appealing. Joe's prayer that usually starts with, "Thank you, Lord, for this good food" was simply, "Thank you, Lord, for this... --food. Um, PLEASE help it to be good, and, uh..." Ha! Oh well. We ate most of it and it used up some more left-overs, so I still feel like I succeeded.

And now, for our big celebration of New Year's Day, we're drinking punch. Yup, that's it. And letting the kids stay up and watch one last movie before life gets back to normal. Wall-E this time. I think I'm going to go work on the puzzle a little more though. That will be fun. :-)

Here's a picture of Sam before I go. He plays with his Legos for several hours each day and getting more and more creative with them. Such great toys. The best toys use a kid's brain, not batteries. :-)

The Cutest Gingerbread House in the Whole Wide World!!!

Or at least the cutest one I've ever made! Mom & I tried one once when I was a teenager. As I recall, it was a disaster. This one was from scratch (got the pattern and instructions from Country Woman magazine) and when I read through the directions I thought, "Surely we can do that!" Although I must confess I really expected to be disappointed--these things are tough and I knew it. But in the end, I think I like mine BETTER than the one in the magazine! Whoa!!! When does THAT ever happen?! I wanted "shingles" on the roof instead of frosted mini-wheats and I LOVE the red and green candies all around the roof edge--it's bright and cheery. :-) Anyway, here it is!

And a close up so you can see the white sprinkles "snow" on the front of the house. James took this picture, that's why it's... like this!

The front...

And the whole thing in all its glory! :-)

I added the "snow" melting off the roof at the very end. I think I like it, but I don't think I like it in the picture! Ha! But on the whole, I love the house and I'm so proud of us!!! Sam & Katie helped with the shingles and the candies. It was FUN!!!

I finally posted pictures and way too much text (big surprise) about our Christmas with Mom & Dad, so scroll down if you're interested. :-)

The Christmas Festivities!

Or what I can remember of them, anyway.

I think it was about noon on Thursday when Mom & Dad showed up and crawled into the box for the kids to unwrap. :-) After all that excitement I really don't know what we did with the rest of the day. I know what we were supposed to do, but didn't. It's been a tradition of ours to bake gingerbread men and decorate them on Christmas Eve, but I thought for a change we'd make a gingerbread house this year instead. It was a good plan... Ha! I made the gingerbread, we cut it out, my artistic mother etched the most crooked bricks I've ever seen in my life on it (who would've known?!), we baked it up... and all of the pieces are STILL sitting in a bag in the kitchen! We never did get it put together!!! My new goal is to construct it sometime before New Years Day. We'll see.

Although I was brought up that it is a sin to open presents before Christmas morning (!), our kids all buy gifts for each other from the dollar store and we let them open them on Christmas Eve. Sam is really into nutcrackers--thinks they're terrific--so Joe got him a little unpainted one.

Joe got a little stamp set for Katie. -- Such thoughtful gifts and they were well loved and appreciated! Mom & Dad looked like this most of the time. Cameras at the ready...
It was HILARIOUS watching Joe try to play with the paddle ball one of the others had gotten him. He hit himself in the head several times. Ha!

I know we watched a movie that night, though James was greatly distraught because it wasn't a Christmas movie. (We usually watch It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve.)

I can't remember why, but I think I was up until nearly 1:00 that night. As I was getting ready for bed, Joe was just waking up! He had been asleep for a few hours, but woke up and just couldn't go back to sleep. I always sleep on the couch on Christmas Eve with all of the Christmas lights on (been doing it since I was a teenager--I love it!), so I decided to let Joe sleep on the floor in there with me. I drug Sam out of bed and put him on the floor in there, too, just because. They'll probably want to do this every year now! Ha!

The rule was that nobody was allowed up before 6:00 Christmas morning. I think it was 6:00 on the dot when the crowd started gathering! We waited on Mom for a while, naturally. ;-) We had a good family prayer, thanking God for all of his blessings and what Christmas is really all about, then praying for those families that are enduring such heartache and bearing such heavy burdens right now.

It was finally time to dig into the stockings! Joe was thrilled with the first few finds: a new hat and some new arrows for his bow.

Sam has been dying to try freeze dried ice cream like the astronauts eat. Now we know. Astronauts deserve our sympathy!!! Ha!
Joe decided to open his two littlest presents first. They turned out to be a guitar tuner and picks--which he was thrilled with. I keep telling him the size of the package doesn't mean anything. :-)
Grandma Vicki is all about handmade gifts. She made new pj's for the boys and a new nightgown for Katie--and and a matching one for this doll that she also got. Katie named her Esther and LOVES her. I keep meaning to take a picture of the two of them in the matching nightgowns, but haven't done it yet.
She also got some Bendaroos, which seem to be a popular gift this year! Ha! They are SO fun.
This was Joe's reaction when he peeked in the big bag and saw that he'd also received a new guitar for Christmas!
Though you wouldn't know it by this picture, he was sooooooooo excited.
These are the sweatshirts Mom got/made for James. I think he's worn one of them every day since Christmas!
Check out THIS one! Ha!
A robot from Grandma Wanda...
Dad with his stack of little gifts: candy, more candy, and a new set of pj's.
And Mama with part of her gift--a new Lanny Wolfe CD. Of his old songs, that is--nothing newly recorded.
We really had way too many presents this year. Last year was SO NICE, everybody getting just a few things that they really, really loved. But the gifts under the tree just seemed to keep piling up over the past few weeks! (Not my fault and not my folks fault, that's all I can say! Ha!) Some of Katie's other favorite gifts were some of those bead things that you put on a mold and melt together (that doesn't make any sense--I'll have to take a picture! Ha!), some sculpting clay, a stuffed poodle in lieu of a real one, some piano lesson books, and a bright pink suitcase--which has been used to tote all of her loot all over the house ever since. Joe got a new suit outfit, some night vision spy gear... Hhmmm. Other stuff, I'm sure! Sam got a bow and arrows of his own, a remote controlled truck, a mold-n-paint set, some wooden stuff to paint and--his favorite thing of all--a new set of Legos. Of course, they all got pj's and shoes from Grandma Wanda, too. I love those practical gifts! James' loot was all clothes this year, I think--pj pants, shoes, jeans, and a suit. James bought me a new red coat, some slippers (my feet are warm for the first time in weeks!), and a set of the three cutest mixing bowls in the whole wide world. My Mom got me the annual puzzle, a denim skirt, and a Greater Vision CD and DVD. As always, the stocking suffers were my favorites. I got some great socks this year! :-) And I FINALLY--after about 8 years--got the egg thingie my Mom has been promising me! I'm sure it has a different name, but I don't know what it is. It's this crazy little contraption you put in the water when you're boiling eggs and it tells you when they're done. I never know when they're done, so this is GREAT! And she also got me a pair of black leggings... with a 4" band of white fur around the ankles! HA! She declares she thought they were knee socks and the fur would be at the top, not down at my feet where everybody would see it. I told her I LOVE them. I'm going to wear them everywhere and tell everybody through a pseudo smile, "My mother got me these..." Ha!

After we were all done opening presents Mom and I got busy in the kitchen making breakfast, then starting on Christmas dinner. While that was going on, Sam got busy painting his little wooden canoe.

My Mom had bought these inflatable boxing gloves for the boys. They are the worst gift ever in the whole wide world. If they actually use them, something is GOING to get broken. And where in the world are they supposed to put the things away?! I'm hoping they'll all be punctured by the end of this week. I may see to it personally. ;-) Anyway, it only seemed right that Mom help blow them up.
We had a delicious dinner--everything turned out perfect. The ham was the best I've had in a long, long time and the turkey was nice and juicy and pretty, too. Mom's homemade cranberry sauce was fantastic--I'm never going back to the can now! Can't remember what all we had, I just know that for days and days I ate way, way, way too much!

It must be nice to be a guy. While the women are slaving over a hot stove for a couple of hours, then when they're standing over the sink and cleaning it all up afterwards, THIS is what the men do.

Even Joe! But then, Joe hadn't been feeling the greatest. He never did come down SICK, was just tired and groggy and had a runny nose.
In the end, Mom and I were able to get naps, too. Mom's wasn't very long, but I slept for nearly two hours, I think!

Here's Dad and a tube. He's ALWAYS had a thing for tubes. I remember him playing with them all throughout my life--just loves 'em. Especially if there's a dog to talk to and bark at through them, but even the kids are fun.

This is the only other picture I have. Dad and the kids watching old cartoons on YouTube. I think it was El Kabong or something like that. They were enjoying it, whatever it was!
We sat down on Christmas night and watching It's a Wonderful Life, making James very happy. During the movie Katie was fooling around with Sam's new bow and managed to mess it up somehow. Something went crazy with the tension and it was really loose. So after the kids went to bed--at 10:30, I think--Dad and I spent the next HOUR and a HALF (yes, until midnight!) working on it! Him non-stop, and me intermittently. And for the first hour we were wrestling around with it, trying not to break any fingers or anything while flexing the bow so we'd have room to work with the string. THEN we discovered that we could pop the end off and do it without the wrestling match! Ha! I kept telling Dad to just let it go--we could take it to a sporting goods store and have them show us how to fix it. But there's no giving up with Dad. He was reminding me a lot of HIS Dad, the way he would study the bow and turn it over and study the other end, then hold it back and study it some more--you could just see all of the gears turning in his head--and he eventually did figure it out. The execution was a little elusive (!), but we eventually did get it back the way it was supposed to be. And it was quite rewarding, I must say!

After that--GET THIS!!!--my Dad... MY DAD!!!... stayed up talking until nearly 2:00am!!! WHOA!!! That doesn't happen. The talking OR the staying up late. He prefers to be in bed by 9:00 or 10:00, but on a rare occasion he MIGHT last until 11:00. We had both had long naps in the late afternoon and just weren't tired, so we just kept on talking. I can't remember what all about now, but it was so nice to be able to spend some time with just Dad. :-)

Saturday did NOT go the way I had planned. It was decided early in the day that the whole crowd was going to Albuquerque!!!!! Can you believe the insanity of that?! I don't go to town. I especially don't go to town in the evenings or on Saturdays. And I REALLY especially don't go to town on Saturday, the day after Christmas--that's just NUTS! But everybody else was going and it's not like I'm going to stay home alone. ~sigh~ ;-) We went to Hobby Lobby, but I don't think we found anything we couldn't live without. No great sales this year--not yet anyway. When Dad had had just about all he could take of that place (not his kind of store, I assure you!), we headed to Guitar Center to buy new strings for Joe's guitar. Afterwards we grabbed lunch at Jack in the Box, where our family can eat for under $10. Gotta love that. Then we spent a considerable about of time at the indoor flea market and had a great time. THAT is Dad's kind of place. :-)

We came home and Dad and I looked online and found some instructions on the proper way to restring a guitar, so between the two of us we were able to get Joe fixed up, tuned up, and strummin' away. Don't remember much else about that day, except that we watched The Incredibles before bed, then Mom and I stayed up playing games. I won. :-)

Sunday we had a really good service--our pastor preaches such great messages! I was so blessed. We went to Pizza Hut for lunch (with the kids' Book It! coupons, of course) and had the very best pizza I've had in years. YUM!!! Came home and had time for a nap before heading back to town for BTI service. Afterwards we stayed and visited with the Clarksons for quite a while before heading home and putting the kids to bed. James, Mom and I played I Buy (James REALLY won--it was ridiculous!), the Mom & I stayed up and played another game. I won. :-) She couldn't bear to be outdone by Dad, so we stayed up until nearly 2:00am that night.

Yesterday morning we got up and said goodbye to Mom & Dad and they headed back east again. They'll be going to the funeral in Arkansas tomorrow. I'm so glad they'll be able to be there, though it shortened their time here. There is a family suffering so greatly right now and I'm thankful Mom & Dad will be able to be there to support them with their love and prayers.

I had devotions with the kids and tried to go back to bed afterwards (I'd only had about 4 hours sleep), but just couldn't pull it off. We had a pretty sluggish day around here, but managed to get in a full day of school and get all of the laundry done--and I even stayed up and finished the ironing while watching my new Greater Vision DVD (thanks, Mom!) last night.

Today (I started writing this last night, but was too tired to finish) we got the house pretty well cleaned up and put back into order and had another good school day. That means that the only two days my kids got "off" for Christmas break this year were Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Ha! They have NO IDEA that other kids get two or three weeks off. DON'T TELL 'EM! My kids get time off all throughout the year with the traveling we do, so it all evens out. :-)

The big accomplishent today was finally putting the gingerbread house together!!! It was so fun and it turned out SO CUTE! I'll get those pictures and make a separate post in a minute. It deserves its own. ;-) But before we end this one...

My Dad always threatens to tickle Mom "right down to the floor" when she gets mouthy or fiesty with him, but it's been years since I've actually seen him do it. But we got lucky last week! Ha! Love it. Makes me so happy and makes me feel like a kid again, watching Mom and Dad "fight," except he recruited help this time. (I never got involved when I was a kid! Ha!) I think it all started because she called him a creep or something of that nature. Doesn't matter. I got the good part on film. ;-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I'm soooooooo tired and don't have it in me to truly blog, but for those out there who might not yet know what was in that giant box...

Here is Katie's reaction when we asked if they'd like to open the big box today instead of waiting until tomorrow.

Rippin' it up!
Hhmmm... now how to get into it???

Pocket knives, of course!

Oh, wait--it's light. Just lift it!

It's a Box-o-Grandparents!!!!!!

Oh, happy day!

What could be better than THAT?!

Shock, laughter, tears... it was GREAT.

We managed to keep it a secret somehow and it was so, so, so great. It was sort of a last minute thing. After it was determined about a week and a half ago that we wouldn't be able to go back east for Christmas Mom & Dad started trying to figure out if it would be possible for them to come out west instead. And it worked out! God is so good!!! :-)

Some super sweet lady at a furniture store found the box for us (she sounded so excited about our plan--almost giddy! Ha!) and we wrapped it up and had it sitting in the house for a few days. When Mom & Dad arrived today we made sure the kids were occupied elsewhere so we could sneak them into the box, then call the kids out and tell them it was time to open it up. :-) How fun is that!!! They were pretty confused for a while though, wondering how Grandma and Granddad had stayed in that box all this time... Ha! We finally explained it to them. Anyway, it was great fun to have a GIANT box wrapped up like a present and to unwrap the Grandparents and to see the shock turn into excitement and then utter glee when the kids started registering all of it. What great memories. We are all just so, so, so, so, so happy to have Mom & Dad with us for Christmas!!! Life is just so very, very grand. I'm sure I'll blog lots more about it... but probably not while they're here. You know how I am. I already told Mom that tomorrow night we're not touching the computers--we're playing games!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!!!
